Who we are

Discovery Place Queen Alexandra is an accredited, not-for-profit organization that provides comprehensive, compassionate, and engaging child care for children enrolled at Queen Alexandra School in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Our dynamic team brings together staff from a variety of backgrounds including teachers, child care workers, and university students.

As lease-holders in the school we believe that it is imperative for us to be active members in the communities where we operate. Our team strives to build positive relationships with administrators and teachers as well as with the children, their families and the surrounding community.

Hours of operation

Discovery Out of School Care Queen Alexandra is open from 7:00am – 5:30pm Monday-Friday. We are open for care on all PD days, non-instructional days, Winter Break and Spring Break. We close from December 25th - January 1st annually for a winter break and on all statutory holidays. We also operate year-round which means our doors are open for summer holidays in July and August.

Our Program

Our program is planned around a weekly or monthly interest. These ideas are chosen based upon children’s interests and the children are encouraged to be a part of the interest based planning process.

Discovery Out of School Care looks for opportunities to embrace and celebrate different cultures, ethnicities, and celebrations and collaborate with our surrounding community.  Families are encouraged to share traditions and occasions that are important to their family with the OSC. This is accomplished when parents share regional delicacies, traditional games and stories, or share their traditions with us. Parents and caregivers are welcome anytime. Discovery Out of School Care fully embraces an open door policy and the input of parents and caregivers is essential to our ongoing success.

Our Kinder Care

Our Kinder Care program is planned around a weekly or monthly interest. These ideas are chosen based upon children’s interests and the children are encouraged to be a part of the interest-based planning process.

Discovery's KinderCare program looks for opportunities to embrace and celebrate different cultures, ethnicities, and celebrations and collaborate with our surrounding community.  Families are encouraged to share traditions and occasions that are important to their family with the program.

Parents and caregivers are welcome anytime as we fully embrace an open-door policy and the input of parents and caregivers is essential to our ongoing success.

We integrate Kinders from our sister site Discovery OSC (Rideau) who join our morning and afternoon Kinder programming.

About Queen Alexandra

This school officially opened in 1906 and was initially called Duggan Street School in honour of J. J. Duggan, former alderman and mayor of Strathcona. It was renamed Queen Alexandra School in 1910.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, demand for housing skyrocketed in the city because the University of Alberta students were looking for places to rent. Most of the homes to the north of University Avenue were demolished and replaced by low-rise apartments.

However, Queen Alexandra School remains to this day!
